Doktorandkurs: "Moving and Being Moved. Comparative Reflections on Film"
Starting from an anthropological reflection on the basic relations between activity and passivity in human life this series of lectures will explore in which way the medium of film alters the configurations of moving and being moved that are dominating the human condition outside and inside aesthetic practise. This enterprise will proceed by means of a continuous comparison between various forms of art and their relations to film. It will be guided by a rather sophisticated choreography of examples which may serve as a test for the main contentions as well as the stimulation for discussions with the participants in the course.

An introductory lecture will focus on photography and its familiy resemblances with painting and film. The following ones will discuss the architectural and musical features of moving images, leading to a basic understanding of their imaginative power. This understanding will be further developed in the second half with respect first to the narrative dimensions of film-making, second to the difference between feature films and documentary ones and finally to the role of illusion and immersion in the reception of moving images.
